Before you book

What is included in the tour price?

Our tours include airport meet and assist, all transfers by air-conditioned coach, hotels with breakfast (some nights half board), guided excursions as listed in the itinerary, and a tour leader throughout. Where the itinerary includes them, the sleeper train, felucca night, Dahabiya cruise or domestic flight are also included.

What is not included?

International flights, your Egypt visa, entrance fees to monuments and museums, meals not listed, optional excursions, travel insurance and tips. Please check the "Excluded" list on your tour page.

How big are the groups?

Most of our tours run with 8 to 20 travellers. The price per person depends on the final group size.

I'm travelling alone. Can I have my own room?

Yes. A single room is available for a single supplement, shown on each tour page. The number of single rooms per departure is limited, so please book early.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance is required. Your policy should cover medical costs, emergency evacuation and repatriation. We also recommend cover for cancellation, delays and lost luggage.

Can the itinerary change?

We always aim to follow the published itinerary. Sometimes we need to adjust the order of visits or the timing because of opening hours, public holidays, weather or local conditions. Your tour leader will always look for the best solution, and travel times are approximate.

Passport, visa and arrival

What documents do I need?

A passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date, with at least one blank page. Please check the entry rules for your nationality before you travel.

How do I get my Egypt visa?

Most European travellers can buy a visa on arrival at Cairo Airport, or apply online in advance through the official e-visa portal. Fees and rules can change, so please check before departure.

Are international flights included?

No. You book your own flights to and from Cairo. Please send us your flight details so we can arrange your airport pick-up.

What happens when I arrive?

Our representative meets you at Cairo Airport, helps you through arrival and takes you to your hotel. The first day is an arrival day with no activities planned. Hotel check-in is usually in the afternoon.

What if my flight is delayed or I can't find the driver?

Please let us know about any flight change as soon as possible. If you can't find our representative within 30 minutes after leaving the arrivals hall, call our emergency number and we will help you straight away.

When should I book my flight home?

On the last day we transfer you to Cairo Airport. If your tour ends with an overnight train or a return from the Red Sea, please check with us before booking an early flight.

Money, payments and tipping

What currency is used in Egypt?

The Egyptian pound (EGP). Euros, British pounds and US dollars are easy to exchange in banks and exchange offices.

Can I use my bank card?

Yes. ATMs are widely available in the cities and accept Visa and Mastercard. Bring both if you can, as some machines only accept one. Your bank may charge a fee for withdrawals abroad.

Should I bring cash?

A mix of a bank card and some cash works best. If you bring US dollars, make sure the notes are new and undamaged, because old or torn notes are often refused.

How do I pay entrance fees?

Most monuments and museums now accept card payments only at the ticket office, so please bring a working credit or debit card. Your tour leader will help you buy the tickets.

How much should I tip?

Tipping is a normal part of daily life in Egypt. To keep things simple, your tour leader collects a small amount from everyone at the start of the tour and handles tips for drivers, guides, hotel and restaurant staff. A personal tip for your tour leader at the end is always appreciated.

Should I keep money aside for emergencies?

We recommend having access to around USD 200 extra for unexpected situations outside our control.

What can I buy as souvenirs?

Papyrus, cartouches with your name in hieroglyphs, spices, essential oils, cotton and alabaster are popular. Bargaining is normal in the markets.

On tour

Who leads the group?

An experienced tour leader travels with you from start to finish. Local guides join for the main sites, such as the pyramids, Luxor and Aswan.

What are the hotels like?

Comfortable, centrally located hotels chosen for their position and value. Some smaller hotels do not have a lift, so you may need to carry your luggage up the stairs.

Which meals are included?

Breakfast is included every hotel night. Some nights include dinner (half board), and felucca or Dahabiya nights are full board. Your tour leader will recommend good local restaurants for the other meals.

How do we travel around Egypt?

By private air-conditioned coach, sleeper train, and on some tours by felucca, Dahabiya or domestic flight. Some travel days are long, and travel times are approximate.

What is a felucca night like?

A felucca is a traditional Nile sailing boat. It is simple and relaxing, and you sleep on deck under the stars. Because feluccas depend on the wind, part of the journey may continue by road.

How much luggage can I bring?

One suitcase or backpack per person, plus a small daypack. On domestic flights the allowance is usually around 20 kg.

Can I do laundry?

Most hotels offer a laundry service for a small charge.

Which optional excursions are available?

Popular extras include Abu Simbel, the Philae sound and light show, Tutankhamun's tomb, Luxor Temple, and the Islamic and Coptic quarters of Cairo. Your tour leader can book these locally. Please don't buy excursions from street sellers, as prices are often much higher.

Health, safety and local customs

Can I drink the tap water?

We advise drinking bottled water, which is cheap and available everywhere.

Do I need vaccinations?

No vaccinations are required for Egypt, but please check with your doctor or travel clinic well before departure. Bring any personal medication and a small first aid kit.

Is Egypt safe to travel?

The tourist areas we visit are generally safe. Use common sense as you would anywhere: keep valuables in the hotel safe, carry your passport in a money belt, take a taxi at night and avoid crowds or demonstrations. Please check your government's travel advice before departure.

What should I wear?

Light, loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, especially at mosques, churches and in smaller towns. Women may want a light scarf for mosque visits. Comfortable walking shoes and a hat are essential.

What is the weather like?

From October to March days are pleasant and nights can be cool. From April to September it is hot and dry, particularly in Luxor and Aswan. Rain is rare.

What happens during Ramadan?

In 2027 Ramadan is expected from around 8 February to 9 March. Tours run as normal and food is available for visitors, but some sites have shorter opening hours. Please avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day.

Are there other holidays that affect the tour?

During Eid holidays some shops, restaurants and sites may close or have shorter hours. We plan around these dates and will tell you about any changes.

What about electricity and language?

Egypt uses 220V with round two-pin plugs, the same as most of Europe. Arabic is the official language, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Planning your trip

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

October to April is the most comfortable time for sightseeing. December and January are the busiest months. Summer is very hot in the south but quieter and good value.

What should I pack?

Light clothes plus a warm layer for evenings, comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream, a scarf for religious sites, a reusable water bottle, copies of your passport and insurance, and swimwear for the Red Sea.

Can I take photos at the sites?

Phone photography is allowed at most sites. Some tombs and museums charge an extra camera ticket, and flash is often forbidden. Drones are not allowed without a special permit. Please ask before photographing local people.

Will my phone work in Egypt?

Most hotels have Wi-Fi, but it can be slow. A local SIM card or eSIM is cheap and easy to buy, and your tour leader can help.

Can I extend my trip?

Yes. We can arrange extra nights in Cairo, a Red Sea beach stay or a Nile cruise before or after your tour. Just ask us.

Is the tour suitable for people with limited mobility?

Some sites involve uneven ground, steps and long walks in the heat. Please contact us before booking so we can advise which tour suits you best.
